Imo State Approves ₦104,000 Minimum Wage for Workers – Doctors, Teachers Benefit

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has approved a new minimum wage of ₦104,000 for civil servants, marking one of the most significant wage reviews in the state’s history.

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday night during a meeting with labour union leaders at the Government House, Owerri.

Previously pegged at ₦76,000, the new minimum wage represents a 36% increase, aimed at easing the economic burden of workers.

Other Salary Adjustments:

  • Doctors: ₦215,000 → ₦503,000
  • Tertiary Institution Lecturers: ₦119,000 → ₦222,000

Governor Uzodimma explained that the decision was driven by the need to support families, boost productivity, and stimulate Imo’s local economy.

“When workers are paid well, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy grows. This is our way of investing in Imo people,” he said.

Economic Reforms in Imo

Since 2020, the administration has:

  • Increased the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from ₦400 million to over ₦3 billion monthly.
  • Raised federal allocation earnings from ₦5–₦7 billion to about ₦14 billion.
  • Reduced the state’s debt profile from ₦280 billion to below ₦100 billion.

The governor also acknowledged the challenges of insecurity, COVID-19, fuel subsidy removal, and wage disputes but noted that the reforms are beginning to yield positive results.

Pension and Welfare Programs

Starting August 27, the state government will pay off the last batch of gratuities owed to pensioners, totaling ₦16 billion. Additionally, a health insurance scheme and improved healthcare facilities are being rolled out across the state.

Labour Leaders React

Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) praised the governor’s decision.

NLC Chairman, Uchechigemezu Nwigwe, called it “a rescue package” that places Imo among Nigeria’s highest-paying states.

TUC Chairman, Uchenna Ibe, lauded Uzodimma’s “strong political will” in driving reforms and improving worker welfare.

With this landmark decision, Imo State now joins the ranks of states offering some of the most competitive wages in Nigeria.
