Labour Party Tells Atiku to Step Aside for Peter Obi Ahead of 2027 Election

The Interim National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Tony Akeni, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his presidential ambition in support of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on ARISE Television on Friday, Akeni warned that if opposition forces remain divided, it would clear the way for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to secure a second term easily.

Only Peter Obi Can Defeat APC – Akeni

Akeni stressed that Obi represents the only credible chance of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election.

He said:

*“The same understanding that our country has been blessed by an extraordinary individual in the person of Peter Obi is what drives us today. We also have a similar understanding that our country has been blessed by an extraordinary person, His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Two giants strutting the political space of Nigeria, on the side of the progressive aisle. Looking at the two personalities, their backgrounds, where they’re coming from, and where they have told Nigerians they are heading, we say that it is time to come to the intersection of their individual aspirations, and to take a stand. And the steps we have taken is based on research and study.”*

On Labour Party Crisis

Addressing insinuations of a faction within the Labour Party, Akeni dismissed such claims, insisting that the Supreme Court judgment had already settled all leadership disputes.

He explained:

“There is no faction in the Labour Party. The judgment of the Supreme Court put paid to that. The interpretation that followed a few months ago also sealed that judgment. There is only one Labour Party. Whatever else you see is just smoke and fog by people who want to impersonate the party’s structures to line their pockets.”

According to him, the party is now firmly under the leadership of Senator Ben Ali-Ousmane, who serves as the interim national chairman.
