12 Arrested Over Arise TV Journalist Somtochukwu Maduagwu’s Murder in Abuja Robbery

Fresh details have emerged in the tragic death of Arise Television journalist Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu, who was killed during a robbery attack at her Abuja apartment on September 29, 2025.

Her colleague, Rufai Oseni, disclosed on Thursday that police investigations have led to the arrest of twelve suspects believed to be members of the armed robbery gang responsible for the attack at Unique Apartments, Gishiri Village, Katampe District, which also claimed the life of the building’s security guard, Mr. Barnabas Danlami.

According to the report, the FCT Commissioner of Police ordered a manhunt for the suspects. Acting on digital intelligence from Giga Forensics (a subsidiary of EIB Stratoc), operatives of the Scorpion Squad led by ACP Victor Godfrey tracked and arrested the suspects across multiple states.

During interrogation, key suspect Shamsudeen Hassan confessed to shooting the security guard, while Sani Sirajo admitted trying but failing to restrain Ms. Maduagwu from falling off the building. The robbers fled with her Honda CR-V, which was later recovered.

Recovered items from the suspects include:

  • One fabricated AK-47 rifle
  • 36 rounds of live ammunition
  • One pump-action gun
  • One locally made pistol
  • Victims’ mobile phones and cash proceeds

Police say each suspect received ₦200,000 from the robbery proceeds. The remaining gang members were intercepted on October 8 while planning another operation in Maitama, Abuja.

Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with efforts to capture other fleeing members. Photos of the suspects have been withheld to avoid compromising the case.
