Popular Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Yemi Alade, has revealed that lying about her age for several years once plunged her into depression.
Speaking in a candid interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the “Johnny” crooner admitted that she spent three years claiming to be 22, only to later realise she was actually 25.
According to Yemi, the truth hit her hard and left her mentally unsettled.
“There was a time someone asked me how old I was, and for about three years, I kept saying 22. Then one day I calculated it and realised I was already 25. I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t process it,” she confessed.
The award-winning artiste said the experience was a turning point in her life, teaching her the dangers of self-deception and the importance of self-awareness.
“It was mental — for three years I didn’t know my age. But it opened my eyes to how easily we can lie to ourselves and lose track of reality,” she added.
Fans have praised Yemi for her honesty and openness, noting that many young people can relate to the pressures that come with age and public image in the entertainment industry.
