A cybercafé operator has allegedly defrauded a woman of ₦1.5 million under the guise of securing her admission into the Lagos State College of Health Technology. This incident has drawn sharp criticism from the institution’s Provost, Prof. Raheem Akewushola.
The victim, whose identity remains confidential, reported the matter to the college after the promised admission failed to materialize.
According to a statement released on Sunday via the Lagos State Government’s official X handle, the victim initially transferred ₦500,000 to the suspect, identified as Mr. Arapatile, as part of the admission arrangement. Subsequent transactions reportedly increased the total amount taken from her to approximately ₦1.5 million.
When the admission did not come through, Arapatile allegedly assured the woman that she could still attend classes and receive a certificate. However, upon requesting a refund, he reportedly threatened her, prompting her to escalate the issue to the school management.
During interrogation, Arapatile confessed to the allegations but claimed that the admission was not for LASCOHET, but for a professional body known as CIMB, for which he asserted he was a liaison officer. He, however, could not provide the full meaning of the acronym.
The statement also mentioned that during preliminary investigations, stamp pads from various institutions were recovered from his shop, and further investigations are ongoing.
Prof. Akewushola warned the public against engaging with Arapatile, emphasizing that he is neither a staff member nor an authorized agent of the college. “Our administration has zero tolerance for such acts,” he stated, adding that the institution would pursue all legal avenues to ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice.
In a related matter, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, announced that the university has initiated a crackdown on admission racketeering. She revealed that a staff member had already been sanctioned for allegedly collecting ₦400,000 from a prospective student’s mother with the promise of securing admission into the Faculty of Medicine.
