The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that peace has finally returned to Rivers State following months of political turbulence that led to a six-month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Channels Television on Thursday, Wike assured Nigerians that all key stakeholders have now agreed to work together in the interest of the oil-rich state.
“We all met and agreed on how to move forward, and to the glory of God, as I speak to you, peace has returned,” Wike stated.
Wike and Fubara Speak After Tinubu’s Directive
Wike revealed that he had spoken directly with Governor Siminialayi Fubara after Tinubu lifted the emergency rule earlier this week. According to him, both leaders are now committed to moving Rivers forward.
“As of yesterday, I spoke to the Governor. I told him I was leaving that night to come back, and he told me he was leaving this morning. So I can tell you that, by the grace of God, peace has returned,” he said.
‘Crisis Merchants’ Won’t Prevail
The FCT Minister accused some unnamed individuals of thriving on political crises in Rivers, insisting that their efforts would not derail peace.
“There are people who are natural crisis builders, who think they can only benefit when there is crisis. If we didn’t want the state of emergency lifted, we could have done one or two things to make sure it continues,” Wike warned.
Assembly Sets the Tone for Peace
Wike further noted that the Rivers State House of Assembly has already taken steps to consolidate peace and restore full democratic governance.
He urged all parties to put aside personal interests and prioritize the stability, security, and development of the state.
