Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has defended the suspension of Twitter (now 𝕏) by the Muhammadu Buhari administration, citing national security and the dangers of unregulated social media. Speaking on Channels Television, Mohammed revealed that Twitter was not registered to operate in Nigeria before the ban.
He said the eventual agreement reached with the platform validated the government’s decision. According to him, the move was not political but aimed at protecting national cohesion amid rising fake news, hate speech and disinformation.
Mohammed noted that years of engagements with media stakeholders and social platforms failed to yield self-regulation, prompting decisive action. He maintained that unregulated social media had become a threat capable of setting parts of the country against each other, unlike traditional media with editorial gatekeepers.
