The Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Ovie Success, has criticized claims on X that Igbos were responsible for developing Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
The controversial claim was made by a user, Chinee Okoloigwe, who argued that Asaba’s growth was driven by the migration of Igbo men from nearby Onitsha.
@chineekol posted: “Asaba is that developed extension of Onitsha, built by Onitsha residents. Without them, Asaba wouldn’t be what it is today.”
Ovie Success quickly fired back, questioning why Onitsha natives had failed to replicate such growth in their own state.
He wrote: “I am disappointed in you for this statement. Why can’t you develop your state?”
In another post, he added: “Asaba is more developed than your state right now. It’s the best hub for business, health, tourism, education, and security.”
Other X users also dismissed the claim that Igbos were behind Asaba’s transformation.
@davovia argued: “Igbos are their own undoing. Always interfering in others’ affairs is why you face rejection everywhere.”
@IgnatusOnianwa responded: “Saying Onitsha people built Asaba is shallow. The real question is: what made them come? Asaba has unique qualities that attracted them.”
@papacharlesoge added: “Did we build roads or hospitals? No. We only leveraged Delta State’s progress and Asaba’s safety. Many are now moving back to Onitsha due to its bad roads.”
@godzie_recon concluded: “This claim is false. While Igbo investors are many, people from other tribes have also invested heavily. Saying Igbos developed Asaba is like saying Nigerians built the UK just because they migrated there.”
