Former Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mutalubi Adebayo (SAN), has argued that senators are not entitled to police escorts, insisting that only judges should be exempted from President Bola Tinubu’s directive withdrawing police officers from Very Important Persons (VIPs).
Speaking on Arise News, Adebayo reacted to the President’s instruction to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to redeploy officers attached to VIPs to areas battling terrorism and insecurity. He maintained that lawmakers who feel unsafe should engage private security companies rather than rely on public police personnel.
According to him, the duties of senators cannot be compared with those of judges, whom he described as a special category requiring mandatory police protection due to the sensitive nature of their work.
Adebayo criticised some lawmakers’ opposition to the policy, singling out Senator Abdul Ningi and describing the reaction as excessive. He stressed that redeploying officers would strengthen internal security and better serve the Nigerian public.
