Victor Osimhen Ruled Out of Crucial Nigeria vs South Africa World Cup Qualifier

Nigeria’s hopes of securing a 2026 World Cup ticket suffered a major blow after star striker Victor Osimhen was officially ruled out of Tuesday’s qualifier against South Africa in Bloemfontein.

Osimhen, who limped off during Saturday’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo, sustained a chin injury following a challenge from Claude Niyomugabo.

Team doctor’s evaluation on Sunday confirmed the Napoli striker will not make the trip, with further treatment planned at Galatasaray.

Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed in a WhatsApp message that Osimhen woke up with severe discomfort, making him unfit for the decisive clash.

With the forward unavailable, coach Eric Chelle is expected to turn to Tolu Arokodare, who came off the bench to score the winner against Rwanda. Cyriel Dessers, who replaced Osimhen on Saturday, was unable to replicate the striker’s attacking threat.

Nigeria’s World Cup qualification journey remains under pressure. The Super Eagles currently sit third in their group with 10 points, trailing leaders South Africa (16 points) and Benin Republic (11 points). Only the group winner will secure an automatic ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

This setback revives fears of Nigeria missing back-to-back World Cups after failing to qualify for Qatar 2022.
