Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has praised team captain William Troost-Ekong for his remarkable leadership and positive influence within the Nigerian national team — despite the defender’s limited playing time in recent matches.
The Galatasaray forward took to social media after Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo, a victory that sealed the Super Eagles’ qualification for next month’s World Cup play-offs.
Troost-Ekong, currently playing for Al-Kholood in Saudi Arabia, has seen reduced minutes under head coach Eric Chelle, but his leadership presence remains undeniable.
“An amazing leader on and off the pitch. You’ve always been there for each and every one of your teammates. Thank you, skippo,” Osimhen wrote on his Instagram story after the match.
Although Troost-Ekong didn’t feature in the Benin clash, television cameras captured him actively motivating teammates from the sidelines — shouting instructions and urging concentration throughout the game.
The 32-year-old defender has captained Nigeria through several international campaigns, including the 2023 AFCON, where his leadership and composure earned widespread admiration.
While Osimhen delivered a stellar on-field performance with a hat-trick, Troost-Ekong showcased the off-field leadership and mentorship that have long defined his tenure as Super Eagles captain.
As Nigeria prepares to face Gabon in next month’s CAF World Cup play-off semi-final in Morocco, the unity and shared leadership between Osimhen and Ekong will be pivotal in steering the team toward a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification.
