Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has sparked debate after declaring that international law is selectively applied against weak and poor nations.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle, Sani argued that international law only works for countries without nuclear power, while global superpowers operate above it. He alleged that powerful nations and their allies routinely violate sovereignty, invade other countries, and intimidate international judicial institutions without consequences.
Sani’s remarks followed reports of a United States military operation in Venezuela that allegedly led to the arrest and removal of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. According to the former lawmaker, such actions expose what he described as the hypocrisy of global justice systems.
He maintained that while weaker nations are held strictly accountable, influential states are shielded from sanctions and prosecution, regardless of their actions. The comments have since generated reactions online, with many Nigerians weighing in on the credibility and fairness of international law.
