US Evacuates Non-Essential Staff From Niger Over Rising Security Threats

The United States has ordered the evacuation of non-essential embassy staff and their families from Niamey, Niger, citing heightened security risks after an attack near the city’s international airport.

A U.S. travel advisory warns citizens to avoid Niger due to crime, terrorism, kidnappings, and health risks. The advisory also highlights that routine or emergency services cannot be provided outside Niamey.

The evacuation follows an ISGS-claimed assault on Diori Hamani International Airport on January 29–30, where attackers targeted military installations alongside civilian operations. Nigerien forces, supported by the Russian African Corps, repelled the assault, neutralising several assailants.

The State Department advised staff to travel only in armoured vehicles, observe curfews, and avoid crowded areas. International concern is growing as Niger faces a deteriorating security situation, including ongoing risks in Niamey, the Tillabéri tri-border region, Diffa near Lake Chad, northern Agadez, and the Niger–Benin oil corridor.

The U.S. evacuation underscores the volatility of the region and the increasing threats posed by terrorist groups in West Africa.
