UK Announces Strict New Entry Rule: No ETA, No Entry From February 2026

The United Kingdom has confirmed that, beginning February 25, 2026, visitors who do not hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) will be denied entry. The policy marks a major shift for nationals of 85 visa-exempt countries, including the United States, Canada, France, Australia, and others.

UK Pushes Toward Fully Digital Border System

In a statement released on Monday, the UK Home Office described the new measure as a crucial step toward building a fully digital immigration system. The plan aims to deliver a more efficient and contact-free border process in the coming years.

Under the new requirement, all travellers entering the UK must secure digital clearance—either through an ETA or an eVisa—before arrival. Airlines will be responsible for verifying compliance before passengers board their flights.

The Home Office noted that the system will also apply to connecting passengers who pass through UK passport control.

Since its initial rollout in October 2023, more than 13.3 million travellers have already used ETA benefits.

UK Says ETA Will Enhance Security and Improve Travel Experience

Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Mike Tapp, said the scheme gives authorities greater power to screen and block security threats before their arrival.

“ETAs are also better for travellers,” he added. “Digitising the immigration system ensures the millions of people we welcome to the UK every year enjoy a more seamless travel experience.”

Exemptions and Important Advice for Dual Citizens

British and Irish citizens remain exempt from the ETA policy. However, the government cautioned dual British citizens to travel with either a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement to avoid boarding issues.

The ETA system is expected to significantly reshape travel procedures as the UK intensifies its digital border transformation.
