SUnited States President Donald Trump has warned that the US may carry out additional military strikes in Nigeria if the killing of Christians continues. He made the remarks in an interview, reacting to a previous US strike conducted in north western Nigeria during Christmas.
Trump said while he hoped the operation would be a one time action, continued attacks on Christians could prompt repeated strikes. Although he acknowledged that Muslims have also been victims of violence, he insisted that Christians were being targeted more.
Nigerian authorities have rejected claims of religious persecution, stressing that insecurity in the country is driven by terrorism, banditry and criminal violence affecting all communities. Analysts warn that Trump Nigeria strikes comments could heighten diplomatic tensions and complicate security cooperation between both countries.
