Former US President Donald Trump has praised British soldiers who fought in Afghanistan, calling them “among the greatest of all warriors,” following widespread backlash over comments seen as dismissive of NATO allies.
Trump had earlier suggested that allied troops stayed away from frontline combat in Afghanistan, triggering strong criticism from UK leaders, veterans and families of fallen soldiers. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the remarks as insulting, stressing the sacrifices made by British forces alongside the US.
After a phone call with Starmer, Trump issued fresh comments acknowledging the role of UK troops, noting that 457 British soldiers lost their lives during the conflict. He said the bond between the UK and the US military remains unbreakable and praised the courage of British forces.
The Afghanistan war claimed over 3,500 coalition lives, with the UK suffering the second-highest casualties after the US. Trump’s latest remarks were welcomed by some UK figures, though critics said respect for allied sacrifices should never be in doubt.
