Mali and Burkina Faso have announced fresh entry restrictions on United States nationals in a reciprocal response to Washington’s expanded travel ban that placed both countries on a no-entry list. The decision was confirmed in separate statements issued by their foreign ministries.
According to the governments, the measures are a direct reaction to President Donald Trump’s recent expansion of a nationality-based travel ban affecting nearly 40 countries, including several African states. Mali said it would immediately apply the same visa conditions imposed on its citizens by the US, while Burkina Faso confirmed it was enforcing “equivalent visa measures” on Americans.
Mali also expressed regret that such a major decision was taken without prior consultation. The White House had justified the ban on security grounds, claiming it targets foreigners deemed a threat to Americans.
Both countries, currently under military-led governments, are members of a Sahel confederation alongside Niger, which is reportedly considering similar steps.
