The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has praised the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) for its rapid response following a tragic boat accident in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
According to NIWA’s Assistant General Manager of Corporate Affairs, Suleiman Makama, the swift rescue efforts saved at least 50 passengers from the ill-fated wooden boat, which capsized along the Shagunu–Dunga axis of Kainji Lake.
Preliminary reports indicate that the passengers were returning from a condolence visit to Dugga community when the mishap occurred.
Sadly, 27 people have been confirmed dead — eight bodies were recovered on Monday and 19 more on Tuesday — while search and rescue operations are still ongoing for missing persons.
NIWA disclosed that the boat was carrying 138 passengers, including men, women, and children. Thanks to the use of life jackets, 46 men, 58 women, and several children were rescued alive.
The agency has begun efforts to trace and interrogate the boat operator while warning against overloading and non-compliance with safety rules.
NIWA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe navigation on Nigeria’s waterways, urging both operators and passengers to strictly follow safety guidelines to prevent future tragedies.
