Former governorship candidate, Tonye Cole, has called on the Federal Government to privatize all four of its refineries. During an interview on ‘Politics Today’ on Channels Television, Cole emphasized the need for the government to transfer the refineries to capable hands to ensure their operational efficiency.
“If I were the federal government today, I would prioritize the privatization of the four refineries while keeping a stake to represent the people’s interests,” Cole stated. He highlighted the current inadequacy of refineries in Nigeria to meet domestic demands, urging the government to enable these facilities to function effectively.
Cole also mentioned that competition could enhance efficiency within the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).
In addition to his advocacy for refinery privatization, Cole announced his intention to run for the Rivers State governorship in the upcoming elections. Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time, he expressed his determination to succeed in his third attempt after unsuccessful bids in 2019 and 2023.
Reflecting on his political journey, Cole acknowledged the significant influence of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, in his political career. He affirmed his commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and clarified that he has no plans to join Amaechi in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“Nobody can take away the fact that he brought me into politics,” Cole remarked, while also emphasizing his focus on the governorship of Rivers State. “I have my own ambition and goals,” he added, distinguishing his aspirations from those of Amaechi, who is currently pursuing the presidency.
