Tinubu’s VIP Police Withdrawal Faces Doubts — Shehu Sani Reacts

Former lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has commended President Bola Tinubu’s directive ordering the withdrawal of police officers from Very Important Persons (VIPs), but warned that the policy may not be implemented effectively.

Reacting on X on Sunday, Sani described the move as timely considering Nigeria’s security challenges but cautioned that it risks becoming “a policy that begins and ends as a statement.”

President Tinubu had ordered that police officers attached to VIPs be withdrawn and redeployed to strengthen nationwide security, according to a statement by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga. The overhaul aims to refocus police personnel on core policing duties.

Under the new system, VIPs requiring armed protection must now obtain officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Additionally, the President approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers to improve security presence, particularly in underserved rural areas.
