Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has criticised President Bola Tinubu over reports that the Presidency spent over N34 billion on foreign trips within two years, describing the move as insensitive amid Nigeria’s economic hardship.
Reacting via X, Shehu said the reported N34.39bn foreign travel expenditure showed a clear disconnect from the daily struggles of Nigerians. He labelled the spending “heartless governance”, accusing the administration of prioritising luxury travel over citizens’ welfare.
According to Shehu, such expenses amount to economic sabotage and a deliberate misuse of public resources at a time many Nigerians are battling inflation, unemployment, and rising living costs. He further described the development as immoral and indefensible, arguing that leadership should reflect sacrifice and accountability.
Shehu warned that continued heavy spending on international trips could deepen public anger and erode trust in government, stressing that Nigerians are already overburdened by economic pain.
His comments have since reignited debates online about governance priorities, transparency, and the true cost of leadership in Nigeria.
