Tinubu Summons Former Rivers Sole Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas Amid Probe of ₦254bn State Funds

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday met with the outgone Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to reports, Ibas arrived at the Villa at about 5:50 pm dressed in brown native attire. He was accompanied by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede.

During the meeting, observers noted that Wale Edun briefly stepped out of the session and returned carrying a file, raising curiosity about the documents under review.

The closed-door meeting comes just days after Ibas vacated office on September 17, 2025, following the end of his six-month tenure as Sole Administrator of Rivers State. His appointment had followed President Tinubu’s directive suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly during a political crisis earlier in the year.

Shortly after Tinubu reinstated Governor Fubara and the Assembly, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, passed a resolution to probe the state’s finances during Ibas’ emergency administration.

The lawmakers resolved to investigate how funds were spent from the consolidated revenue fund, particularly on contracts and other expenditures, within the six-month period.

Rivers State is reported to have received at least ₦254.37 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) between March and August 2025 under Ibas’ watch.

However, Ibas dismissed the probe, describing it as a “fool’s errand”, insisting that his stewardship had been transparent.

The meeting with President Tinubu is seen as significant, coming at a time when questions over financial accountability and the political stability of Rivers State remain on the front burner.
