President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a credible, secure, and inclusive national identity system, describing it as essential to Nigeria’s growth, security, and development.
The President made this known during the official launch of the NINAuth App, a mobile-based digital identity authentication platform developed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
According to a statement released on Friday, October 31, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the new app represents a major step in Nigeria’s ongoing digital transformation drive.
“Today’s launch of the NIMC NINAuth App heralds a remarkable milestone in our nation’s digital public infrastructure journey,” President Tinubu stated.
“This innovation marks another step forward in our collective pursuit of a digitally empowered Nigeria.”
MDAs To Adopt NINAuth For Staff Verification
Tinubu announced that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) will soon adopt the NINAuth App for staff data and identity verification, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on transparency, efficiency, and accountability in governance.
“Our administration is modernising digital infrastructure to eliminate bottlenecks and ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of background, has access to essential services without unnecessary delays,” the President added.
He emphasized that the NINAuth App will help Nigeria achieve global standards in secure identity management, enabling seamless access to both public and private services while maintaining strong data protection measures.
National ID System Key To Development And Security
Tinubu described a unified identity system as the backbone of development, saying it supports financial inclusion, enhances social welfare delivery, improves national security, and ensures accurate data for planning.
“A credible and inclusive national identity system is fundamental to our developmental goals,” he said. “It ensures that every identity counts and every citizen matters.”
NIMC DG Explains How The App Works
Speaking at the event, NIMC Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said the app would allow real-time identity verification for businesses and government agencies while eliminating multiple data entries across platforms.
She disclosed that 126.7 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the national identity database, with 25 million new registrations recorded within the past two years and an average of 1.3 million daily verifications.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, also commended the initiative, describing it as a “forward-thinking solution” to Nigeria’s identity and security challenges.
“Every efficient nation builds systems that can identify, authenticate, and secure its citizens. Identity is the backbone of national security and service delivery,” he said.
The Presidency added that the NINAuth App would help integrate government databases, reduce corruption, simplify access to public services, and promote data-driven decision-making across all sectors.
“We are closing the gaps where inefficiency and corruption thrive. This is digital governance in action,” Tinubu said.
With this development, Nigeria joins the ranks of countries leveraging digital identity as a tool for social inclusion, transparency, and sustainable national development.
