Tinubu Hails Lagos as First African City to Host E1 Electric Powerboat Championship

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded Lagos State for making history as the first African city to host the E1 Electric Powerboat Championship, describing the landmark event as a major step toward promoting clean energy, innovation, and sustainable marine development.

In a goodwill message released on Friday through Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, President Tinubu commended the Lagos State Government and the organizers of the global competition for their foresight and commitment to innovation.

“This championship is not merely a thrilling spectacle on water but a statement of intent,” Tinubu said. “The E1 Powerboat series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation, showcasing electric-power vessels that point the way to a greener and more sustainable future.”

The President noted that the international championship aligns with his administration’s vision for the blue economy, underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to renewable energy, marine tourism, and coastal infrastructure development.

He explained that investments in clean energy and marine technology would help create jobs, empower Nigerian youth, and position the nation as a major player in the global sustainability drive.

Calling himself a “proud Lagosian,” Tinubu hailed Lagos as the perfect host for the championship, describing the state as “the cultural capital of Nigeria, the heartbeat of our economy, and a symbol of resilience.”

“Lagos’ vibrant waterways and dynamic people embody the spirit of competition, creativity, and hospitality,” the President said.

The opening ceremony, held at the Lagos Boat Club in Ikoyi, featured an exciting regatta led by Governor Sanwo-Olu and shakedown runs by participating teams from different countries.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in his remarks, said hosting the E1 Lagos Grand Prix (E1 Lagos GP) was more than just a sporting event — it was an opportunity to showcase the city’s innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness.

“E1 Lagos GP is more than a race; it is a celebration of Lagos’ dynamism. It’s the Spirit of Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The event marks a significant milestone for both Lagos and Nigeria, positioning the nation as a rising hub for clean energy sports and marine innovation in Africa.
