The Presidency has justified President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police officers from VIP escort duties, insisting the move will boost security in vulnerable communities nationwide.
Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga explained that the decision emerged from a high-level security meeting in Abuja and aims to reposition the police for more effective national policing.
Under the new directive, VIPs seeking armed protection must now apply to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Onanuga noted that over 100,000 police officers currently guard VIPs—manpower he said is urgently needed in crime-prone areas.
He added that redeploying officers from escort duties will improve police visibility, responsiveness, and overall security across states. The Presidency described the previous arrangement as an inefficient use of scarce security resources.
