Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has openly criticized Mikel Arteta’s tactical decisions, claiming the Gunners’ manager leans too much on instinct instead of making bold calls when it matters most.
Walcott’s comments came after Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield, where new summer signing Eberechi Eze was left on the bench until the second half.
“The club have backed Arteta heavily, giving him options everywhere, but he tends to fall back on his instinct of ‘staying in the game,’” Walcott said on the It’s Called Soccer podcast.
“That approach worked to a point, but substitutions need to happen earlier – [Eberechi] Eze showed more in his first two touches than [Gabriel] Martinelli managed all game.
“I mentioned it when Jack Grealish joined Everton and was benched for the opener – big signings should be played straight away.”
Eze, who sealed a late move to Arsenal before the close of the summer transfer window, is still waiting for his first start in the red and white shirt.
