Tension in Rivers: Fubara Reinstated as Governor But Still Missing After Emergency Rule Lift

The political atmosphere in Rivers State remains tense following the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, whose whereabouts are still unknown days after President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month emergency rule imposed on the state.

It was earlier reported that the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (rtd.), officially handed over power to Governor Fubara on Thursday. In his farewell broadcast, Ibas urged Rivers people to rally behind the governor as he resumes office.

However, uncertainty has deepened as Fubara has yet to make a public appearance in Port Harcourt, sparking widespread speculation and concern about governance in the oil-rich state.

Arise Television’s correspondent in Rivers State, Friday Olokor, confirmed that while the state capital remains relatively calm, the absence of the governor has created “a vacuum in governance,” leaving residents anxious.

“The atmosphere is calm, there is no problem. But the whereabouts of the governor is still not known, even though there is speculation he might arrive today,” Olokor said.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly remains divided, with rival factions holding parallel meetings. The deepening split has stalled legislative activity, compounding challenges for residents already wary of political instability.

Observers warn that the continued antagonism could escalate tensions. “Where two elephants fight, it is the ground that suffers,” Olokor cautioned, urging lawmakers to reconcile in the interest of the people.

Civil society groups and stakeholders are now demanding clarity from the state government to prevent the crisis from spiraling into another prolonged political showdown.
