U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to the Nigerian government, stating that he has instructed the U.S. Department of Defense to prepare for possible military action in Nigeria if the administration “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
Trump made the declaration in a fiery post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Saturday, barely 24 hours after designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over alleged persecution and killings of Christians.
In his statement, Trump said the U.S. would immediately halt all aid and assistance to Nigeria and could intervene militarily to “wipe out Islamic terrorists” responsible for the violence.
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing,” Trump posted.
“I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians! WARNING: The Nigerian Government better move fast!” he added.
The remarks have caused shockwaves across diplomatic circles, with many describing Trump’s tone as unusually aggressive.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, swiftly rejected Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” dismissing it as baseless and misleading.
Political analysts warn that the escalating rhetoric could strain U.S.-Nigeria relations, while security experts are urging diplomatic dialogue over threats of force.
Reactions have continued to pour in across social media platforms, with Nigerians expressing mixed feelings — some applauding Trump’s bold stance against terrorism, while others condemned what they called foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
