Popular Nigerian singer Teni has sparked a wave of reactions online after revealing the unusual reason she avoids giving people money on Fridays.
In a now-viral video, the award-winning artist explained that she deliberately withholds cash gifts on Fridays because, according to her, most people use such money to indulge in pepper soup and catfish treats instead of meaningful purposes.
Speaking humorously in Pidgin English, Teni said:
“Me I no dey give anybody money on Friday. No no no, if you give person money on Friday, them go use your money go chop pepper soup ooh.”
The “Billionaire” crooner shared a personal experience where someone she helped financially ended up spending the money on a plate of pepper soup, despite initially claiming it was for business.
Teni advised givers to rather hand out money on Mondays, when recipients are still focused on productivity and planning their week.
The video quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from netizens. While some found her reasoning hilarious and relatable, others criticized the generalization.
User @Bigshamx quipped, “You fit give person money for Monday, e go keep am till Friday and still use am chop pepper soup.”
Another, @Chiamaka, noted, “This is why many people hesitate to help—entitlement ruins everything.”
