Tambuwal Drops Bombshell: “I’ll Back Atiku Over Wike for Nigeria’s Leadership”

Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has declared that, when it comes to leadership choices, he would throw his weight behind former Vice President Atiku Abubakar rather than Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Tambuwal made the remark on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he stressed that his political decisions are guided by principles of governance and national interest, not personal sentiments.

“When it comes to leadership of this country and leadership of the people, tomorrow, not even today, I would rather support Atiku than Nyesom Wike,” Tambuwal said.

The ex-governor emphasized that his political disagreements in the past have never been personal, recalling that he had maintained cordial relationships with both allies and rivals across party divides.

“You have never seen me going against President Bola Tinubu personally, you have never heard of me going against Nyesom Wike personally,” he explained.

Tambuwal further cited his past differences with former President Goodluck Jonathan as an example of principle-based opposition.
“We disagreed on principle, the way, and the direction things are going. I had no problem personally with Goodluck Jonathan, but we disagreed, and I left PDP for APC,” he said.

Highlighting his ability to separate friendship from politics, Tambuwal added:
“It is not about my friendship with you. If Atiku Abubakar comes in here and Wike requests my phone, which is personal to me, I will personally give it to Wike as a personal friend.”

Political analysts view Tambuwal’s position as a reflection of the deep divisions within Nigeria’s opposition bloc ahead of the 2027 elections, where alliances could play a decisive role in determining who takes power.
