Super Eagles Coach Hints at Surprise Picks as Nigeria Battles Rwanda in Must-Win World Cup Qualifier

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has hinted that newcomers Felix Agu and Benjamin Fredrick could be included in his squad for Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, scheduled for 5 p.m. today, September 6, in Oyo.

The Malian tactician revealed this during a pre-match press conference on Friday, praising both players for their impressive performances in May’s Unity Cup clash against Jamaica.

“I have a plan in my head, I need to think about this game. Every player in this team can play at every moment — during the game, before the game, after the game. They deserve to be here, they deserve to play this game,” Chelle said.

While Agu faces strong competition at fullback from Ola Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Bruno Onyemaechi, Fredrick is contending with captain William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Chigozie Awaziem for a spot in central defence.

Super Eagles captain Troost-Ekong also spoke on teammate Ademola Lookman, who was denied a big-money summer move to Inter Milan. According to Ekong, the Atalanta forward has remained upbeat and highly motivated in camp.

“The coach said he’s the best player in Africa. With what I’ve seen these days, he’s even more motivated,” Ekong stated.

Nigeria, whose qualification hopes remain uncertain, will rely on Lookman’s form and the possible fresh energy of Agu and Fredrick to secure a vital win against Rwanda before facing South Africa on Tuesday.
