Head coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, faces a potential FIFA suspension following controversial remarks made after their defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2026 World Cup playoff final on Sunday.
Chelle alleged that individuals in the opposing technical area engaged in “voodoo” practices during the penalty shoot-out.
The match concluded with a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, with the Leopards ultimately triumphing 4-3 on penalties.
Chelle had to be restrained by his coaching team amidst the tension.
The Malian coach has since issued an apology for his conduct, attributing his reaction to heightened emotions.
Osasu Obayiuwana, a former member of FIFA’s anti-racism taskforce, expressed concerns on X: “After @FIFAcom reviews this incident, I fear that Eric Chelle, the @NGSuperEagles head coach, will face severe consequences for this outburst – potentially a hefty fine and/or a touchline or stadium ban.
This could result in him missing two-thirds of Nigeria’s AFCON group matches.”
