Soldiers and Police Clash at Jos Market as Phone Repair Dispute Escalates

Tension erupted in Jos on Monday after soldiers and police officers clashed at the GSM market in the Hamaz area. The fracas reportedly began when a soldier confronted a roadside phone repairer for allegedly damaging his device. Eyewitnesses said the soldier attempted to arrest the trader, prompting a nearby police officer to intervene and advise that the matter be taken to a station.

The situation escalated when the soldier called reinforcement. His colleagues arrived in a Hilux truck, assaulted the policeman, injured him, and allegedly took his rifle. Traders fled as fears of a possible shootout grew.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident, describing it as “disgraceful.” Spokesperson SP Alabo Alfred stated that personnel involved had been sanctioned and assured that measures were in place to prevent future clashes.
