Grimsby Town have been fined after fielding an ineligible player during their sensational Carabao Cup second-round win over Manchester United.
The League Two side stunned the Red Devils last week, clinching a dramatic 12-11 penalty shootout victory after a 2-2 draw in normal time.
The Mariners were later drawn against Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the competition.
However, on Tuesday, the English Football League (EFL) confirmed that Grimsby had breached tournament rules regarding player eligibility.
The club has now been fined £20,000, with £10,000 suspended until the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
Despite the infraction, the EFL made it clear that Grimsby’s historic win over Manchester United would stand, with the punishment restricted to a financial penalty.
In its official statement, the EFL said: “Grimsby Town has been fined £20,000, of which £10,000 is suspended until the end of the 2025/26 season, for breaching competition rules. The club reported the issue the day after the match.”
The League body also clarified: “There is no indication that the fixture outcome will change, and Manchester United will not be reinstated.”
Reacting to the ruling, Grimsby officials expressed regret but stressed the mistake was unintentional. A spokesperson added: “While we regret the oversight, we are pleased the EFL acknowledged our immediate self-reporting. We now look forward to facing Sheffield Wednesday in round three.”
