Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ofili has confirmed she is switching allegiance to Turkey, a decision that marks a huge blow to Nigerian athletics.
The 21-year-old speedster, widely regarded as one of the most talented sprinters of her generation, announced the move after wrapping up her 2025 season.
“Wrapping up my 2025 season has been a whirlwind of new experiences and big decisions. As some of you have heard, I’m also starting a new chapter representing Turkey,” Ofili said in a statement.
Ofili holds Nigeria’s 200m national record with an outstanding lifetime best of 21.96s, making her the only Nigerian woman to ever run under 22 seconds in the event.
During her career under the Nigerian flag, she competed at several international championships, including:
- Youth Olympics (Buenos Aires 2019)
- World Championships (Doha 2019 & Budapest 2023)
- 2022 Commonwealth Games (Birmingham)
- Paris 2024 Olympic Games
- Multiple African Championships
Her departure adds to growing concerns about athlete welfare and support in Nigerian sports, with many young athletes leaving in search of better opportunities abroad.
The big question remains: What does this mean for the future of Nigerian athletics?
