Shehu Sani Critiques Donations as ‘Eye Service’ Amidst Remi Tinubu’s N20 Billion Fundraising

Former federal lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has expressed skepticism regarding donations made to influential figures in power, labeling them as ‘eye service.’ His comments came in response to the announcement by Remi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Tinubu, who revealed that she has raised over N20 billion for the National Library project in Abuja.

On Tuesday, Tinubu shared that the fundraising effort has successfully garnered significant support towards completing the long-abandoned National Library, which has been in limbo for nearly 40 years.

In his reaction, Sani noted that Remi Tinubu was fortunate compared to Hajiya Turai Yar’adua, the wife of former President Musa Yar’adua, who faced challenges in securing pledges for her International Cancer Center initiative. Sani remarked that many who promised to donate to Yar’adua’s project failed to fulfill their commitments after her husband’s passing.

“First lady Senator Remi is lucky to raise N20 billion for the National Library that has been abandoned for close to 40 years. That is commendable and well appreciated. Her Excellency Hajiya Turai Yar’adua was not that lucky; many people who pledged to donate billions to her International Cancer Center refused to redeem their pledge after Yar’adua died. The project remained stalled for over a decade along Airport Road, Abuja,” Sani stated.

He concluded by emphasizing that most donations are merely for show, urging the First Lady to ensure that the funds are delivered promptly. “Most Donations are ‘eye service’ for people in power. Our First lady should make sure they ‘send alert as quick as possible’. Happy Birthday to the Distinguished First Lady,” he added.
