The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc. (NBET) over the alleged missing ₦128 billion from the Ministry of Power and NBET.
According to SERAP, the funds were either unaccounted for or diverted, contributing to recurring grid collapses, including the first blackout of 2026. The allegations are supported by the Auditor-General’s 2022 report, which highlighted payments of over ₦95 billion to contractors without evidence of completed projects, and ₦4.4 billion transferred to hydropower projects with unclear utilization.
Filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja (Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/143/2026), SERAP seeks a mandamus order compelling Adelabu and NBET to disclose the full details of public officials involved in authorizing or approving the funds. The group insists accountability is crucial to tackling corruption in the power sector and ensuring Nigerians access regular, uninterrupted electricity.
