Security operatives have successfully prevented an attempted arson attack on the Food Basket Brewery in Makurdi, Benue State, averting what could have been a major economic setback.
The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, when suspected arsonists allegedly tried to breach the brewery’s perimeter fence from the rear, close to the raw materials storage area. The intruders were reportedly carrying containers believed to contain Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), with plans to set parts of the facility ablaze.
According to the Benue Investment and Property Company Limited (BIPC), vigilant security personnel noticed the suspicious movement early and moved swiftly to block the attack.
“Upon realising they had been detected, the suspects fled the scene,” the company said.
No damage was recorded, and operations at the state-owned brewery remained uninterrupted. BIPC commended the professionalism and alertness of the security team, noting that their response protected a critical state asset.
The management disclosed that investigations are ongoing in collaboration with security agencies, while security measures across all BIPC facilities have been reinforced.
Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
