Football legend Wayne Rooney has openly criticised Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca following the Blues’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. Rooney described Maresca’s tactical choices, particularly the decision to withdraw Pedro Neto, as “strange” and damaging to Chelsea’s chances.
Chelsea Struggle Despite Numerical Advantage
Chelsea were forced to play with 10 men early on after goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent off for fouling Bryan Mbeumo. Maresca responded by sacrificing Estevao for substitute goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
Moments later, he made another controversial switch, replacing Neto with Tosin Adarabioyo in a defensive reshuffle. The decisions left Chelsea looking blunt in attack, and things worsened when Cole Palmer limped off with a groin issue in the 19th minute.
Rooney Questions Maresca’s Choices
Rooney argued Chelsea still lacked urgency and creativity even after Casemiro was sent off before halftime, leaving both teams with 10 players.
“They had all the imagination on the pitch, but that spark was missing,” Rooney said. “Yes, they had possession, but it was side to side with no real drive. Neto and Palmer could’ve provided that creativity.”
Murphy Backs Rooney’s Criticism
Former England midfielder Danny Murphy echoed the criticism, telling BBC’s Match of the Day that Maresca’s changes were too negative.
“Neto and Cole Palmer coming off was a really negative move,” Murphy said. “Maybe he should’ve left Neto on for his pace.”
United Claim Vital Win
Despite Casemiro’s red card, United secured victory with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro before Chelsea pulled one back late through Trevoh Chalobah.
The result has intensified scrutiny on Maresca’s tactical decision-making, with fans and pundits questioning whether his cautious approach is costing Chelsea vital points in their push up the Premier League table.
