Ronaldo Becomes All-Time Top Scorer in World Cup Qualifying History at 40

Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has once again written his name in the history books, becoming the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup qualifying history at the age of 40.

Ronaldo achieved the milestone on Tuesday during Portugal’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Hungary, scoring his 40th and 41st qualifying goals to surpass former Guatemalan striker Carlos Ruiz, who netted 39 between 1998 and 2016.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner equalized for Portugal in the 22nd minute, finishing off a precise cross from Nelson Semedo. Moments before halftime, Ronaldo struck again — this time from Nuno Mendes’ assist — putting Portugal ahead 2–1.

Despite Ronaldo’s heroics, Dominik Szoboszlai rescued a late draw for Hungary in stoppage time, delaying Portugal’s automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Ronaldo, who already holds the record as the all-time top international scorer with 143 goals, continues to defy age and expectations. His dream remains to feature in what would be his sixth World Cup appearance — a record in itself.
