Rivers Impeachment Tension Eases as Fubara Moves for Peace Talks

Fresh moves to halt the impeachment of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, gathered pace on Wednesday as lawmakers, traditional rulers and the APC stepped in to broker peace. Two additional Assembly members, Barile Nwakoh and Emilia Amadi, appealed to colleagues to suspend the impeachment, citing widespread calls for restraint across the state.

While admitting possible constitutional breaches, the lawmakers insisted that appeals from respected leaders deserved consideration. Their stance followed earlier interventions by Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo and Peter Abbey, who urged the House to temper justice with mercy.

Mediation efforts have also intensified, with traditional rulers forming a committee and PANDEF, led by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), holding consultations with key actors. Sources revealed Governor Fubara has reached out to Speaker Martins Amaewhule for reconciliation and directed his allies to lower tensions, as APC leaders work to restore calm and prevent a political breakdown in the state.
