President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the Rivers State political crisis has triggered mixed reactions across the South-South. While the move was aimed at halting impeachment threats against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, critics and supporters remain divided over its fairness and legality.
Joseph Ambakaderimo, a South-South leader, praised Tinubu’s approach, describing him as a strategic politician acting in the interest of peace. He cautioned, however, that the President must tread carefully amid the strong influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, noting that only Wike and Fubara can truly resolve their differences.
Ambakaderimo also argued that Fubara lacks the political clout Wike demonstrated during the 2023 elections, suggesting the President’s stance was meant to protect stability in Rivers State.
On the other hand, human rights advocate Dr Jackson Omenazu strongly criticised Tinubu’s intervention, calling it “not presidential enough.” He questioned why Fubara should not be recognised as the political leader of Rivers State and accused the President of undermining fairness and party principles.
Omenazu insisted that only the APC national leadership, not the President, has the authority to define state political leadership.
