Police Foil Bank Attack at Tejuosho Market, Arrest 18 Suspects After Protest Turns Violent

The Lagos State Police Command on Friday announced that it has foiled a violent attempt by hoodlums to attack a commercial bank within the popular Tejuosho Market, Yaba, and successfully restored calm to the area.

According to a statement released by the command, the disturbance began around 2:30 p.m. as a protest over a power outage but quickly spiraled into chaos when a section of the crowd allegedly hijacked the protest.

Hoodlums Turn Protest Into Violence

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed that 18 individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. He described the suspects as “hoodlums and miscreants” who disrupted business activities, attacked passers-by, and attempted to storm the bank.

Mobile Police officers stationed at the bank reportedly repelled the first wave of the attack and immediately called for reinforcements. Tactical squads and anti-riot units were swiftly deployed to disperse the rioters, restore order, and secure the bank premises.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed a full investigation. He reiterates that violent attacks on police personnel and destruction of property will not be tolerated. Lagosians are advised to respect police officers as they work to protect lives and property,” DSP Oluseyi said.

Police Restore Peace to Tejuosho Market

The police confirmed that 18 suspects are currently in custody, with investigations ongoing to apprehend others linked to the violence.

The command assured residents and traders that normalcy has been restored to Tejuosho Market, urging them to go about their businesses without fear.

Friday’s incident came barely 24 hours after the command arrested two suspected cultists with a firearm in Akoka. The police also dismissed recent reports of multiple deaths in a clash at Lakowe, Ibeju-Lekki, though acknowledged that cult-related clashes in different parts of Lagos have claimed at least five lives in recent weeks.

DSP Oluseyi added that the command remains committed to intensifying operations against cultists, gangs, and violent groups threatening the peace of the state.
