Police Arrest Man Posing as ‘Obi of Lagos’ in ₦1.5bn Palace Launch Scam

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, for allegedly impersonating the “Obi of Lagos” and attempting to launch a grand ₦1.5 billion palace project in Amuwo Odofin.

Azubike, who hails from the Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North LGA, Imo State, was apprehended alongside three alleged accomplices: Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41).

According to police reports, the suspects had arranged to unveil a prototype of the so-called “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin. However, before the event could commence, police operatives intervened, sealing the venue and taking the suspects into custody at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.

The incident has generated significant reactions on social media, where youths had previously engaged in heated debates over the planned installation.

Lagos Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, confirmed the arrests and stated that tactical teams, including the Eko Strike Force, were deployed to prevent any public disturbances. He urged residents to remain vigilant against impostors exploiting cultural and traditional institutions, emphasizing that such actions are illegal and could incite ethnic tension.

Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to face charges in court soon.

This incident is not isolated; on April 1, 2023, police arrested Frederick Nwajagu, who was posing as the self-styled Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate.

With this latest arrest, the police have reiterated their commitment to clamping down on activities that threaten peace and order in Lagos.
