Peter Obi Raises Alarm Over Nigeria–France Tax Deal Secrecy

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over reports of a tax cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Nigeria and France, warning that such international agreements require transparency and public trust. In a statement shared on 𝕏, Obi questioned why the full terms of the agreement were not made public despite its significance to national revenue and institutional credibility.

He stressed that Nigeria is not deficient in tax expertise, noting the presence of qualified professionals, advisory firms, and globally recognised consultancies already operating within the country. Obi argued that external partnerships should only be pursued when clearly justified, with defined gaps, measurable benefits, and openness to public scrutiny.

He added that amid rising poverty, unemployment, and economic strain, government focus should be on strengthening local institutions, simplifying the tax system, and responsibly managing public resources.
