The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has sounded a stern warning to the Federal Government, urging it to declare a “national war on insecurity” as violence and killings spiral across Nigeria.
Obi’s call followed chilling reports that over 100 Nigerians lost their lives in a series of coordinated attacks across Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, and Edo states over the weekend.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the former Anambra State governor lamented that Nigeria’s casualty figures are now comparable to countries officially at war.
“When over 100 Nigerians are killed in a single weekend, our casualty figures rival those of nations at war. This is no longer business as usual. It is time to declare a national war on insecurity,” Obi wrote.
He detailed the gruesome incidents: the killing of eight NSCDC officers, the abduction of a Chinese national in Edo, the kidnapping of passengers on the Benin–Iyere–Oluku road, and the slaughter of five soldiers and 58 civilians in Borno.
Obi urged the government to suspend foreign trips and focus all efforts on tackling insecurity, stressing that “investors will not come into a war zone.”
He further condoled with the families of victims, praised the bravery of security operatives, and warned that insecurity is the fastest route to national collapse, citing Somalia and Libya as grim examples.
The former presidential candidate concluded with a call for urgency, insisting that only decisive action can prevent Nigeria from sliding into total anarchy.
