Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Tinubu for spending a large part of his administration abroad, questioning both the timing and the priorities of his frequent trips.
Obi, in a Friday statement on X (formerly Twitter), noted that Tinubu departed again for Europe barely six days after returning from a previous engagement. This, he said, marked the President’s 10th trip to France in just two years.
Obi Highlights Worsening Crises in Nigeria
The Labour Party leader contrasted Tinubu’s foreign engagements with Nigeria’s domestic realities. He stressed that over 79% of Nigerians—about 180 million people—face food insecurity, while the country ranks among the worst globally for childbirth safety, living conditions, and life expectancy.
He also drew attention to recent tragedies, including attacks in Katsina State that left more than 50 people dead and over 60 kidnapped, as well as a boat mishap in Niger State that killed 60 passengers, mostly women and children.
According to Obi, Nigerians expected Tinubu to visit grieving families in Niger State or affected communities in Katsina before embarking on another holiday abroad.
“Where Is the Compassion?” Obi Asks
“From all indications, our President is not finding his home in Nigeria conducive for a long stay, and it should be concerning to us,” Obi said.
He added: “No holiday is more important than Nigerian lives. At a time when citizens need leadership, empathy, and presence, a president should not choose foreign holidays.”
Obi called on the government to prioritize healthcare, education, security, and poverty reduction instead of frequent overseas trips, insisting that true leadership requires sacrifice and presence.
