Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, visited a faction of the Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, at their Lagos office on Tuesday.
Accompanied by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, and Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Obi was welcomed by prominent Afenifere leaders.
The meeting included notable figures such as Oba Oladipo Olaitan, Chief Supo Shonibare, former Lagos State Deputy Governor Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, and General Secretary Chief Sola Ebiseni, among others.
In a joint statement, Obi expressed gratitude for Afenifere’s support during his 2023 campaign and acknowledged their ongoing commitment to good governance. He shared insights on current political developments and outlined his ambitions for the 2027 presidential election.
The discussions covered a range of topics, including Obi’s candidacy for the upcoming elections, the state of the nation, political opposition harassment, threats to democracy, and the worsening economic situation. Obi reiterated his dedication to restructuring and aligned with Afenifere’s key principles regarding education, health, rural integration, and full employment.
Afenifere leaders reaffirmed their commitment to egalitarian values and expressed appreciation for Obi’s alignment with these ideals. They voiced concerns over the diminishing democratic space and encouraged all to uphold the democratic spirit established by Nigeria’s forefathers. The meeting concluded around 4 p.m., with promises for further consultations and collaborations.
