The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s frequent overseas trips, describing them as insensitive and a misuse of public funds.
The backlash followed Thursday’s announcement by the Presidency that Tinubu would embark on a 10-day vacation in Europe. His Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the trip, saying it would last “10 working days.”
Reacting, PDP Deputy Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor accused the president of showing little faith in Nigeria’s healthcare system by continually opting for medical tourism abroad.
“I think the president’s frequent trips are highly insensitive. Imagine the billions of naira that will be wasted on estacodes, medical fees, and travel expenses for him and his entourage. Meanwhile, our local hospitals are underfunded,” Osadolor told Punch.
He further questioned the state of the Aso Rock Clinic, which receives billions of naira annually in budgetary allocations but is rarely used by the president.
The PDP leader also urged Nigerians to reject Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in future elections, arguing that the government has failed to deliver affordable healthcare and security after two years in office.
“This government should apologise to Nigerians for its insensitivity. If it cannot provide affordable healthcare at home, it should not seek re-election,” Osadolor added.
The comments have reignited public debate over medical tourism and the quality of Nigeria’s healthcare facilities, with many citizens demanding transparency on the president’s trips.
