Political economist and former presidential candidate, Prof. Pat Utomi, has issued a strong warning ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he will withdraw his support for Peter Obi if the former Anambra State governor accepts a vice-presidential slot.

Utomi made the declaration on Channels Television’s Politics Today, insisting that Obi must contest for the presidency and not settle for a secondary role. He argued that the Nigerian presidency should not be reduced to a “retirement home” for ageing politicians seeking state-funded comfort.

Calling for reforms, Utomi proposed an age limit of 70 years for executive offices, including president and governor, stressing that leadership requires energy and sharp mental capacity. He clarified that older politicians still have a role to play but should serve in advisory or legislative positions rather than executive offices.

His words:

“Yes, people can stay in the legislature till their 75, possibly even close to 80, but the Nigerian people must not continue to tolerate presidency being where we keep people who need medical attention,” he added.
